About the Centre

General Information

The Centre for Egyptological Studies of Russian Academy of Sciences has been created in November of 1999 by the decree of the Presidium of the RAS. The Centre originated from the Department of Egyptology that existed within the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS since 1992.

According to the Charter and Resolutions of the Presidium of the RAS the Centre is a non-profit-making organization. Being the structural unit of Russian Academy of Sciences, it is a part of the Deprtment of Social Studies of the RAS and it has the status of a state institution.

The Center concentrates its efforts on fundamental scientific studies and applied research in the field of Egyptology. The main activities of the Center include *:

  • Complex studies on historic, cultural, linguistic and religious problems of ancient, mediaeval and modern Egypt;
  • Carrying out archaeological expeditions and conservation of historic and cultural monuments;
  • Creation of the Databank of Eastern-European Egyptology;
  • Training of highly qualified scientific personnel;
  • Development of international scientific relations;
  • Publishing activities in the sphere of the humanities and culture;
  • Assistance to the popularization of scientific knowledge;
  • Development of educational programs (in co-operation with Russian and foreign high schools).

The Centre is headed by  Dr. Galina A. Belova (Director) and Ph.D. Alexey A. Krol (Deputy Director).

* The activities of the Centre for Egyptological Studies of RAS are supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Education and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, by the Embassy of Arab Republic of Egypt and by the Embassy of Kingdom of Netherlands in Moscow and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in A.R. Egypt.
