Deir el-Banat

Territory of Concession

In 2002 the Centre for Egyptological Studies of the RAS was granted a permission to conduct archaeological and anthropological survey at the site of Deir el-Banat. The territory of the concession consists of three large parts: the convent, the southern and the northern necropoli.

Plan of Deir el-Banat

Just a small part of the southern necropolis underwent archaeological research. In 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1995 expeditions of The Supreme Council of Antiquities have opened more than 150 burials. Most of the graves dated to Graeco-Roman and Early Medieval Periods. Some of the coffins and cartonages coming from these excavations now form a part of exposition of the Kom Aushim Museum.
